Silver Maple

  • Native to eastern North America in the eastern United States & Canada
  • Found along waterways & wetlands; highly tolerant of urban conditions so it is seen next to streets
  • Lifespan of about 130-150 years
  • Can grow usually 15-25 meters tall, but has reached 35 feet as well
  • Used as an ornamental tree; the wood is not used much due to its brittleness

Scarlet Oak

  • Native to eastern United States (from southern Maine to eastern Oklahoma and south to Southern Alabama); also native in the extreme south of Ontario, Canada
  • Usually occurs on dry, sandy, or acidic soils
  • Fast growing tree, but relatively shorter life span
  • Can grow 20-30 meters tall
  • Planted as an ornamental tree; wood sold as red oak but is not as strong as the others
